Cary S. Kappel

CARY S. KAPPEL, Patent Attorney received his Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1987, and his Juris Doctor Degree, cum laude, from Fordham Law School in 1992. Mr. Kappel was a staff member of Fordham Law School’s Law Review from 1990-1991, and Associate Editor of the Law Review in 1991-1992. He is a member of the New York State Bar, is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Mr. Kappel was previously an attorney at Kenyon & Kenyon from 1992-1996.

Mr. Kappel devotes a significant portion of his practice to patent litigation, and has represented clients in a broad range of patent cases, including those involving extended release drug formulations, printing presses, servo controlled lighting, stents, collating machines, saddle stitchers, electronic trading software, and ergonomic keyboard supports.

Mr. Kappel is experienced in all phases of U.S. and foreign patent prosecution, including the preparation of numerous patent applications, amendments, and appeal briefs for inventions relating to electrical, mechanical, software, and pharmaceutical inventions, including for example, solid state image sensors, computer software, computer servers, digital electronics, electronic control systems, business models, internet and e-commerce applications, medical devices, pharmaceutical products, software and hardware for analyzing pharmaceutical products, and printing presses. He has experience developing and managing patent dockets for a wide variety of clients, from start up companies to large corporations. In addition, he has experience in interference proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Mr. Kappel also devotes a significant portion of his practice to client consultation, including drafting opinions of counsel evaluating the validity, infringement, and enforceability of patents, in preparing patent due diligence opinions, and in licensing.

Prior to entering law school, Mr. Kappel worked for several years as a design engineer in a research and development division of the Grumman Corporation. During his employment at Grumman, his responsibilities included the design, development, and testing of hardware, software, and firmware for communication systems.
